I have spent the Easter week catching up on reading, trying to understand my assignments and looking around Mahara. What a great piece of software! I don't think I will ever be creating my resume using Word ever again.
I agree with Toni, the availability of having an electronic resource is surely easier than using those annoying plastic sleeves to protect students work, take up valuable classroom space and collect dust. There seems to be an increasing call for accountability and communication where education is concerned. Mahara provides an amazing tool for students to showcase their work - to their parents, other family members who may not live close by and to their peers. I can see parents simply being emailed the link to their child's portfolio and then being able to discuss it with them from there. Of course, there might need to be some parent workshops, education nights so that parents know how to use and access the program!
I thought I was reasonably technologically savvy but am feeling increasingly like I am falling behind. What's that new thing? GLOG??????
As Emma mentioned, I too can see Mahara being a tool more useful for older grades. I found it quite repetitious in terms of the tabs but am sure with some more playing that it will become more familiar. It was interesting looking at the views created by previous students. This gave me an insight into how it can look, feel and be managed effectively. I just hope I can create something like that now!
